Already playing? Update to pack 1.5.0 (everyone must)
Pack 1.5.0 brings the new name into the game, and the server's own mod changes with it, so the server won't let you in with an older pack. Your Pokémon, items, Pokédex and progress are kept: they live on the server. There are two ways to update:
- New instance (recommended): import the 1.5.0 pack as a NEW instance (the steps are below, same as for a new player), bring your settings over as described next, play there, and delete the old instance after a week or so. Keep the old one until then. Your launcher may now list two instances, one called Spuds and one called Spooky's Pokémon Dungeon: the new one is the one you just imported.
- Quick swap (only from pack 1.4.0, if you're comfortable with mod folders): replace four files in your 1.4.0 instance. Steps after the settings part below.
Bring your settings over to the new instance (2 minutes, after it has started once): your key bindings, video and sound settings, server list, map and waypoints, voice-chat microphone and other mod settings live in the old instance's folder.
Windows shortcut: close Minecraft, open PowerShell (Start menu, type PowerShell) and paste irm https://mc.tinwhale.com/spuds-settings-1.5.ps1 | iex, then press Enter. It looks for your old and new instances of the pack (Modrinth App, Prism Launcher, CurseForge app), by the mods inside them, so their names don't matter: press Enter to use the one it suggests, type the number of another, or paste the instance's folder yourself (in your launcher, open the instance's folder, then copy the address from the top of the Explorer window). It shows what it will copy and copies only when you type Y (your key bindings, settings, server list, map and mod settings; the pack's look packs stay on). Anything it replaces is backed up first. Mac, Linux, or if it shows an error: copy them by hand as below (and tell Alex what it said).
By hand:
- Open both instance folders. Modrinth App: right-click the instance in your Library → Open folder. Prism Launcher: right-click the instance → Folder. CurseForge app: on the profile, click ⋮ → Open Folder.
- Close the game. From the OLD folder, copy these into the NEW folder and choose Replace when asked:
options.txt(key bindings, video and sound settings)servers.dat(your server list)- the
xaerofolder (your map and waypoints) - everything inside the old
configfolder, pasted into the newconfigfolder (minimap, voice chat and other mod settings). Copy what's inside, not theconfigfolder itself, so the new pack's own settings stay. - your
screenshots, and any resource packs or shaders you added yourself. - Don't copy the
modsfolder: the new pack has newer versions.
- Start the game. Your old
options.txtmay have switched some of the pack's look packs off. Check Options → Resource Packs: if any of these are in the left list, click them, in this order: E19 Cobblemon Minimap Icons, Cobblemon Interface v1.6.0, Cobblemon Interface Modded, Canon PC Wallpapers, Cobblemon Classic Grass Pack, Emissive Cobblemon Ores, Cobblemon 3D Poke Rods, PuffRadio, spuds-musictitles. Click Done.
Quick swap (only from pack 1.4.0): only four files changed since 1.4.0, so you can update your 1.4.0 instance in place instead. Coming from an older pack? Use a new instance.
- Close the game. Download the CurseForge zip, https://mc.tinwhale.com/SpookysPokemonDungeon-1.5.0-curseforge.zip (it is a normal zip, whichever launcher you use), and open it (double-click it on Windows). Go into its overrides folder, then its mods folder.
- Open your 1.4.0 instance's folder (step 1 of By hand above), then its mods folder. Delete the four files whose names start with
spuds-content-,spuds-heracles-fix-,spuds-flavor-andspuds-music-(one of each). Leave every other file, also the otherspuds-ones. - From the zip's overrides → mods folder, copy these four into your instance's mods folder:
spuds-content-1.0.6.jar,spuds-heracles-fix-1.1.1.jar,spuds-flavor-1.1.0.jarandspuds-music-1.3.0.1.jar. - Start the game. Your settings stay as they are. Your launcher still shows the old name and icon for the instance (rename it there if you like), and your server list still says Spuds: rename it as at the top of this page.
- What's new: everything in game now carries the new name: Spooky Coins, the Coin Trader, the Dungeon menu, the Dungeon Guide quest chapter, the Dungeon Dex and the Boss Spooky trainers, and the quests have spooky new titles. If your game is in Spanish, the quest book, the tips and some chat messages are now in Spanish too. Nothing else changes: same world, items, Pokémon and progress. The full list is in the patch notes (https://mc.tinwhale.com/patch-notes/).
- Size: the pack file is about 120 MB, and the first start of a new instance downloads about 640 MB in total, so keep about 2 GB free.
- Staying on 1.4.0: the old pack can't join the server any more.
New here? Install the pack
You need: Minecraft Java Edition on a PC or Mac (Bedrock, console and phone can't join). Your computer needs at least 8 GB of RAM; 16 GB is better.
The server runs mods (Create, Create Aeronautics, Cobblemon, trainers, towns, waystones, voice chat and more), so you need the same ones. The pack file SpookysPokemonDungeon-1.5.0.mrpack installs all of them for you, at the exact versions the server uses, our own server mod included.
Download the pack: https://mc.tinwhale.com/SpookysPokemonDungeon-1.5.0.mrpack (about 120 MB; this guide lives at https://mc.tinwhale.com/). Using the CurseForge app? Use https://mc.tinwhale.com/SpookysPokemonDungeon-1.5.0-curseforge.zip instead (about 150 MB, Option 3).
Still on the old 1.0 pack? It can't join anymore. Since 1.1 the server is a new world: your inventory, ender chest, Pokémon, Pokédex, TMs and advancements came with you, your builds stayed behind. Import the 1.5.0 pack as a new instance (below), then delete the old one.
Dungeon Dex: https://mc.tinwhale.com/dex/ shows where every Pokémon spawns on the server, what it drops, and which Pokémon drop each item. In game, type /trigger dex for a clickable link.
Patch notes: https://mc.tinwhale.com/patch-notes/ lists what changed on the server, newest first.
Source code (TMCraft): the pack includes our port of TMCraft (code under GPL-3.0-only, assets CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). The source code for the exact version in this pack, spuds-tmcraft-1.4.19+1.8.4-neoforge.3, is here: https://mc.tinwhale.com/spuds-tmcraft-1.4.19+1.8.4-neoforge.3-source.zip
Option 1Modrinth App (easiest)
- Download and install the Modrinth App: https://modrinth.com/app
- Open it and sign in with the Microsoft account you play Minecraft on.
- Double-click
SpookysPokemonDungeon-1.5.0.mrpack. It opens in the Modrinth App and installs everything.- If double-clicking doesn't work: in the app, click + (Create instance) → Upload a modpack → pick the file. Older versions of the app call this From file.
- Give it more memory: open the new instance → instance settings → Java and memory → turn on Custom memory allocation → set it to 6144 MB (8192 MB if your computer has 16 GB or more).
- Click Play.
Option 2Prism Launcher
- Download and install Prism Launcher: https://prismlauncher.org/download
- Click Accounts (top right) → Manage Accounts → Add Microsoft, and sign in.
- Click Add Instance → Import (left side) → Browse → pick
SpookysPokemonDungeon-1.5.0.mrpack→ OK.- Dragging the file onto the Prism window also works.
- Give it more memory: right-click the new instance → Edit → Settings → Java tab → tick Memory → set the maximum to 6144 MiB (8192 MiB if your computer has 16 GB or more).
- Double-click the instance to launch. If Prism says it needs Java, let it download Java 21 for you.
Option 3CurseForge app
- Download and install the CurseForge app: https://www.curseforge.com/download/app (choose Minecraft when it asks).
- Download
SpookysPokemonDungeon-1.5.0-curseforge.zipfrom https://mc.tinwhale.com/SpookysPokemonDungeon-1.5.0-curseforge.zip (don't unzip it). In the app's Minecraft section, click Create Custom Profile, then click Import in that window and pick the zip. It downloads everything. - Three files aren't allowed on CurseForge, so add them by hand. Download all three (don't unzip them):
- https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/odZZdRCE/versions/qCn31XSy/ATM%20x%20MSD%20%5Bv5.0%5D.jar (AllTheMons x Mega Showdown, a mod)
- https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/pPldOOeY/versions/xCPOrDQJ/cobblemonpokemonbadges-neoforge-0.1.1.jar (Cobblemon Pokémon Badges, a mod)
- https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/YLcccJCk/versions/kQo3ZR9T/PuffRadio1.5.zip (Puff Radio, the battle music; 131 MB; a resource pack)
Then, on the new profile, click the ⋮ (three dots) → Open Folder. Move the two .jar files into the mods folder, and
PuffRadio1.5.zipinto the resourcepacks folder. In the game, under Options → Resource Packs, check that Puff Radio is switched on (moved to the right-hand list). - Give it more memory: settings (gear, bottom left) → Minecraft → Java Settings → set Allocated Memory to 6144 MB (8192 MB if your computer has 16 GB or more).
- Click Play. CurseForge opens the official Minecraft Launcher; sign in there with your Microsoft account if it asks.
Joining the server
- Go to Multiplayer. The server is already in your server list as Spooky's Pokémon Dungeon. If you brought your server list over from an older instance, it may still say Spuds: rename it as at the top of this page.
- If it isn't: Add Server → address
mc.tinwhale.com→ Done.
- If it isn't: Add Server → address
- If it says "Server starting, please reconnect", that's normal. The server sleeps when nobody's on. Wait about 30 seconds and join again.
- The first launch takes a few minutes, because it downloads about 640 MB of mods and resource packs.
- You arrive in Pewter City, in front of the Poké Center.
Voice chat
- The first time you join, voice chat asks whether you want push-to-talk or voice activation. If you pick push-to-talk, it asks you to choose a key.
- V opens the voice chat menu: volume, microphone, groups, and switching between push-to-talk and voice activation.
- K mutes your microphone.
- Nearby players hear you; the further away, the quieter.

You can change any of these in Options → Controls → Key Binds.
Finding Pokémon
/track <pokemon>(Tab completes the name) turns your Trainer Card into a Pokémon tracker: hold the card and its arrow points the way. Not caught it yet? It points to the nearest place that Pokémon spawns, preferring places where it's common over places where it's rare. Already caught it? To the nearest wild one around you. The text above your hotbar says where it's pointing and how rare it is there (common, uncommon, rare, ultra-rare), and/track offpoints the card back at trainers.- The Tracker tab in the Dungeon menu (`) does the same with a search box, and lists the last rare spawns.
- The Dungeon Dex (
/trigger dex) lists where everything spawns. - Wild Pokémon around you are level 1 up to your team's average level, and your whole party shares the Exp. from a won battle (half for the ones that didn't fight).
If something goes wrong
- Don't add or update mods yourself (the three files in Option 3 step 3 are the only exceptions, and only on CurseForge). If your launcher offers updates for Create or anything else, skip them. The server needs these exact versions. Sodium is already included.
- The server says you need a newer pack, or a mod is missing: you are on an older pack. Update to 1.5.0 (top of this page).
- Mismatched or missing mods: delete the instance and import the pack file again. On CurseForge, check that the three files from Option 3 step 3 are in place.
- Crashes or freezes while loading: give it more memory (step 4 of your option above).
- Voice chat says it can't connect: tell Alex. The game itself still works.
- "Failed to verify username" or "Invalid session": restart your launcher and sign in again.
- Pack updates: when the server's mods change you'll get a new pack file. Install it the same way.
